A Desert biome is a sandy environment covered in Sagebrush and the only place you can find Prickly Pear Fruit and Saguaro Cactus. It has the second highest temperature and a relatively low moisture content, similar to Grasslands.

Geology
The surface of the desert is made up of dirt that is textured to look like sand, when looked at, it will display as Desert Sand.
Below that is a thick layer of Sandstone that extends down to about 20 blocks in depth, and spans the entire desert biome.
From 20 to 30 blocks below the surface is a band of Iron Ore that also spans the entire desert biome. There is also another band of Iron Ore right above the bedrock layer.
Granite and Limestone also spawn in large pockets underground in the desert.
